An Introduction to CBD

As cannabis is getting recognized more for its medicinal benefits, people are learning more about the importance of cannabidiol (CBD). Not only does this cannabinoid help remove negative side effects of THC, it also has a plethora of its own medicinal benefits.

Believe it or not, the discovery of THC eventually led to scientists understanding that our bodies have an endocannabinoid system of its own. By naturally producing endocannabinoids, our body can regulate a variety of functions, including appetite, memory, mood, and pain. It is not too surprising that cannabinoids, such as CBD, have potential for medicinal applications.

Is CBD A Form of Medicine?

Cannabis was originally made illegal because there was no pharmacological proof of its efficacy. While many have negative connotations about cannabis, CBD is non-psychoactive, which makes it attractive for all patients who suffer from undesirable symptoms. Now, there are hundreds of studies providing evidence that CBD is one of the most versatile medicines on the planet.

CBD helps kill cancer cells and is great for removing nausea associated with chemotherapy. CBD also helps with Alzheimer’s disease, inflammation, epilepsy, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. It may also help with schizophrenia and takes away much of the paranoia and anxiety induced by THC.

From Alzheimer’s to cancer, CBD is proving to scientists and researchers that cannabis is an effective form of medicine for a wide variety of symptoms.

Dr. Ethan Russo says that CBD helps the body maintain homeostasis. Remarkably, CBD helps if there are too little or too many endocannabinoids present, making it quite versatile medicine.

During prohibition, many growers selectively bred strains to have higher concentrations of THC, leaving less CBD. As the medicinal effects of cannabis are being studied, growers are now focusing on high CBD strains. Charlotte’s Web is named after a little girl who was almost fully cured of the constant seizures from Dravet syndrome.

Other strains such as AC/DC, Harlequin, and Sour Tsunami boast a high CBD content. For patients who would prefer not to smoke, there are a wide variety of oils, edibles, and tinctures packed with CBD. These products extract the cannabinoids from the plant, allowing for a way to provide regular doses of this natural medicine.

While researchers need to do more studies and clinical trials on the efficacy of CBD, much has already been learned. As more states legalize cannabis for medicinal and recreational use, look to find CBD making a comeback in the cannabis community.
