What’s all the buzz around the Durban Poison strain?
The Durban Poison strain of cannabis is one of the most prolific in the world. Hailing from the South Africa region, this Sativa is named after the port city Durban. The world renowned Ed Rosenthal was the first to cultivate this strain in the Great Rift Valley before bringing some seeds back to the US. Over the years, Ed inbred this strain and picked out his favorites. Seeds were also spread amongst Ed’s friends as well, including Mel Frank who helped make this strain even more resinous.
In the late 1970’s the seeds were passed off to a man named Sam the Skunkman. He then moved to Amsterdam in the 1980’s and brought this phenomenal strain with him. Skunk #1, Haze, and Durban Poison were all strains contained within his collection. Sam bred this strain to grow in a shorter time to match the short Amsterdam grow season. The Seed Bank catalog finally released this strain officially in 1985. Durban Poison is one of the few true landrace strains that you can still find today.
Durban Poison’s unique ability to grow easily and quickly in a variety of outdoor climates is what makes this strain popular amongst growers. Furthermore, it has got a lot to love for users as well, as it is a pure Sativa. As such, Durban Poison provides an active and energetic head high.
Many people would say that Durban Poison is their favorite strain, as it provides a stimulating head high. Energetic, focused, and uplifted all describe what you will feel on this strain. It has been said that the head high of Durban Poison is not as overstimulating as some of the Hazes. Its high THC content will be sure to leave you feeling a head high. Durban Poison offers virtually no body high.
What makes the Durban Poison strain unique?
One common signature of the Durban Poison strain is its excess expression of the terpene terpinolene. Terpinolene is antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-proliferative, and an antioxidant, which gives it many beneficial medical attributes. Furthermore, terpinolene is apparently a sedative. However, since Durban Poison is relatively low in the sedative myrcene, Durban Poison is still quite the energetic strain. Durban Poison is great for relieving migraines as well. Some even claim it helps with ADD/ADHD.
The aroma of Durban Poison is reminiscent of Thai and South Asia. The sweet, creamy, and citrusy smell is also quite noticeable with a mix of fennel or anise. Durban Poison has dense nugs with bright orange pistils. The plant is full of frosty trichomes, which give it a nice white coat.
The Durban Poison strain is also bred with a variety of other strains, lending its distinctive energy to some more relaxing strains and yielding well-balanced hybrids. For example, the newly famous Girl Scout Cookies is a cross between OG Kush and Durban Poison. Cherry Pie is a cross between Granddaddy Purple and Durban Poison. Also, K1 is a cross between Durban Poison and LA Kush.
Durban Poison is great for socializing, due to its highly energetic mental effects without being too mind-racy. Feeling uplifted and happy, you will be led into a deep conversation trance. Others might also find the high to induce a sense of productivity, as the calming mental energy can provide a sense of motivation. This pure Sativa will not slow you down one bit.
It is no surprise that the Strain Genie picked Durban Poison to belong to the activity group Energize. This strain is electrified with a mental burst of energy. Patients looking for a pure Sativa with a high THC content that will not leave your mind racing too much should certainly give Durban Poison a try. What should I do after ingesting the Durban Poison strain?
Great question! The WoahStork staff works hard every week to bring you a curated cannabis experience. This week, we tested out the Durban Poison strain and planned a day of activities in Los Angeles. Being cooped up in our offices busily working hard, we decided that exploring the outdoors was a wise decision. And what other way to improve the experience than to pair it with some cannabis? We stopped by one of our favorite dispensaries, GMC, down on Melrose Avenue, for a recommendation. The staff kindly suggested Durban Poison, a Sativa that promised to give us an energetic head buzz and leave our minds and feet moving a million miles an hour all day. We quickly agreed and set out on our outdoor expedition.
We had heard wondrous things about Escondido Falls, a 3.8 mile round trip hike that begins 0.75 miles uphill along Winding Way, a paved road that passes extravagant Malibu residences. After gaining almost 200 feet, the road heads downhill and arrives at a wooded park that is open for everyone to enjoy: Escondido Canyon Park. Taking a dirt path that descends through a field of fennel and mustard toward a thicket where a small creek flows. When the water level is high, a bit of rock hopping is required, but easy to cross. After about a mile on the trail, we had gradually ascended over 150 feet from the start point and arrived at the Lower Escondido Falls. This is the perfect location to post up and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
However, for the full experience, Upper Escondido Falls is three times as tall and more than ten times as beautiful. This is a difficult workout, so make sure to wear proper footwear, as you’ll be digging into the path as you use roots and rope to make the climb. We definitely recommend this path since reaching the top yields a sight to behold. You can even get a little wet and climb up the small landings behind the falls. A WoahStork adventure indeed.
Completing our outdoor adventure, we were ready to relax a bit and quench our bodies with some smoothies. We returned to Santa Monica and stopped by The Hive, an organic cafe and superfood bar that offers the best organic choices in both their juice and food selections. From pre-work to post-workout, they have multiple selections for any time or need of your day.
We all tried the Green Hornet, a blend of kale, ginger, avocado, apple, pear, spiraling, green protein alchemy, banana, and bee pollen. The bee pollen was a nice addition, since its one off their superfood boosts that give a bit of an energy boost, which paired well with our Durban Poison experience. The Hive also has kombucha on tap, acai bowls, chia pudding, and even vegan burritos. A nice post-hike stop local in our area that we would recommend everyone stop by and try!
Needless to say, the Durban Poison strain is our go-to favorite anytime we want to we want to go on an outdoor adventure. The head buzz that we got from this sativa put our feet to the work, and made our hike through nature (and some amazing waterfalls) that much better.
If you find yourself at Escondido Falls or The Hive, capture the moment and tag #WoahStork, and you can win a t-shirt!
