What is the Grape Ape Strain?

Grape Ape is a popular Indica heavy strain that gets its name from its distinct color, shape, and aroma. The strain is known for its distinct grape jolly rancher scent and flavor and the beautiful purple coloring along the tight buds.

In addition to smelling and tasting great, it has also built a loyal following in the medical community for its deeply relaxing high, helping with a variety of conditions from chronic pain to insomnia and anxiety. That’s why Grape Ape is in WoahStork’s “Sleep” Activity Group.

For those after some deep relaxation with a pleasant fruity aroma and taste, Grape Ape is sure to please.

A Little History Lesson

Though the exact origins have been lost somewhere in the haze, it’s widely believed to have been popularized by Apothecary Genetics, a medical marijuana farm based in Washington State. Barney’s Farm (also in Washington) has also been at the forefront of popularizing this fun and fruity strain.

Grape Ape is believed to be a crossing of Afghani Indica and Skunk #1 with a little Mendocino Purps thrown into the mix. The plants produce dense, compact buds with a deep purple hue which are sometimes even accented with deep red or copper pistils.

While the vibrant color and intoxicating aroma are what popularized this strain in the first place, its wide range of medical applications are what have given this ape its crown and assured its place in the strain hall of fame for years to come.

Certified Crosses of the Strain: Zkittlez (GA x Grapefruit), 14 grapes (GA x 14er Special)

Time to Flower: Between 7 to 8 weeks

Yield: 6 oz per square foot (considered a very high yield)

Grower Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate

Preferred Climate: This variety grows best between 68-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Typically, growing your plants on the cooler end of the spectrum will result in more of the signature purple hue on the leaves and buds. Ideally, the humidity levels should be kept low–between 30-40% RH during flowering to avoid rot or mildew.

Outdoor vs Indoor Growing: Grape Ape can be grown both indoors and outdoors. When grown outdoors, it prefers a sunny environment with persistent airflow. It is best to keep your plants trimmed to assure the entire plant receives enough sun. Whether indoors or outdoors, humidity levels must be carefully monitored as the dense buds can rot or mold if there is too much moisture in the air.

Feeding Overview:  This is a hungry strain that performs best with moderate to heavy feeding. Healthy, immune boosting compounds such a compost tea will keep your plants happy and help prevent powdery mildew.

Stretch: Less than 100%

Aroma / Aromatics

One of the most notable characteristics of the Grape Ape strain is its intense grape-like aroma. It’s more akin to grape Kool-Aid or grape Bubblicious Gum than freshly picked grapes, however. Underneath the signature waft of candied grape, you’ll find layers of other robust scents that open up at the buds meet the grinder, first a skunky musk from the Skunk #1 parent strain, followed by sweet floral notes of lavender, nag champa incense, and a spicy earthiness.

When smoked, it leaves a woodsy and earthy scent in the air, with traces of sweet grape lingering alongside it.

Flavor / Taste

Much like the aroma, the flavor profile of Grape Ape is equally pleasant and complex. First and foremost, the fruity aspect of this strain hits front and center on the palate. While the grape dominates, other berries (such as blackberries and currants) are also present, giving this strain an overall pleasant and sweet fruitiness.

Underneath the fruity overtones, there are some delicate flower notes backed by that musky earthiness. This strain tends to have a long and pleasant aftertaste that lingers long after you toke.

Grape Ape is definitely a must try for anyone who likes their smoke sweet, fruity, and flavorful. It always keeps you coming back for more.
