Weekly Dose of Woah #9 [January 30, 2019]

fertilized egg emits light

This Wednesday, we show you how a sense of “woah” has been with you your whole life, even from the moment of your conception!

In this weekly dose of woah, we invite you to check out the video below, which shows a groundbreaking new technique that reveals a flash of light being emitted from an egg the moment its been fertilized.

The scientists at Northwester University discovered this when trying to identify which fertilized eggs would be best for In-Vitro Fertilization.

The team discovered that a “zinc firework” is emitted once a sperm successfully fertilizes an egg. They determined that the “size of the lightshow” can be used as an indicator for the quality and health of the fertilized egg. This allows the scientists to select the egg with the best chances of survival to be implanted into the uterus.

Pretty amazing that light can be emitted INSIDE the human body, huh?
